The light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison and was one of the most popular inventions of the 19th Century. However when buying light fitting for our house, we rarely take into account the bulbs that are there inside them. Most often, we are not worried as to what the wattage of the bulb is as long as it lasts and gives out the required amount of light. Many light fittings have certain bulbs that are fitted inside them. The efficiency of light bulbs in measured in lumens while their life is measured in hours of operation. However, in many countries there are harsh criticisms to the incandescent lamp as it is very ineffective in it consumes a lot of energy but does not give out as much light for the amount of energy it consumes. Remember that a bulb with a lower wattage will last longer but it will give less light. Therefore, if you want a certain amount of light you have to make sure that your light fixture can handle the wattage otherwise it will burn out. In addition, if your house is too brightly lit at night it will affect your sleep cycle.

Of late, many countries have been imposing bans on the 100-watt incandescent light bulbs due to its excessive consumption of energy and its low output. In addition, when there are 100-watt light bulbs in the room they generate a lot of heat and therefore even reduce the cooling of your air conditioners. One of the reasons that people still feel that the incandescent light bulbs are more efficient than the more energy saving CFL’s is because CFL’s cost a lot more that these bulbs. CFL’s produce the same amount of light but at a lesser consumption of energy, which has made it a favorite for governments as well as environmentalists however; many consumers are unaware of these facts and therefore feel that incandescent bulbs are better just because it is something they are used to. In addition, CFL’s are also claimed to be inappropriate for some light fixtures as they do not fit in them, but this as well is not true as after the governments have started discussing the impending ban of regular bulbs many companies have made sure that their CFL has fit into every light fitting. CFL is also proved to have a longer life span than ordinary bulbs and are therefore a good investment.
