UV lights are otherwise called as black lights. They emit electromagnetic radiation that is almost in the ultraviolet range. The light, which is emitted by UV light bulbs, is not very visible. These bulbs are also known as Wood’s lamp in medical terminology.

Such UV lights are used for decoration purposes commonly. Artists and therapists use these lights in large. Therapists use UV lights to eradicate microorganisms, to cure plastic resins, and to attract insects for eradication.

In UV light bulbs, generally clear glass envelope is not used to cover the bulb. Instead, it may be replaced by wood’s glass, which blocks most the light that is emitted from the UV light bulb. A very interesting aspect of such bulbs is that when switched on in a dark room, all the white elements glow brightest and it will seem like a magic. Elements such as white shirt, white board, teeth that look normal under fluorescent lamps or incandescent light bulbs will look brighter and glowing under UV light bulbs.

Why does this happen? Have you ever wondered? The white glowing part of the things in your room is nothing but Phosphors. UV bulbs otherwise known as wood’s glass, works as infrared in the day and ultraviolet in the night.

Compared to normal light glasses, UV bulbs have lower mechanical strength and higher thermal expansion. These lights are more hazardous to human as the visible light is lower and the exposure to unsafe UV light gets higher. The color of the bulb is in deep-violet-blue color. It looks quite transparent comparatively.

Mercury vapor is another type of UV light bulbs, as they do not use phosphors. UV lights are used for security purposes too. Wondering how? Using a fluorescent ink, a soft tipped pen, we can mark all security areas, which can be viewed only using UV light bulbs. When such material is lost, then the important pointers will be not seen to naked eye. This is a great security advantage of UV light bulb.

Also in cases of banknotes, black or UV, light bulbs play a very vital role. Some banknotes have fluorescent symbols in it, which can be seen only under UV light or black light. We can also easily differentiate a real banknote from counterfeit banknote using these lights.

In short, these lights can be called as the innovation for night and night light. These highlight lighter thinks in dark, which is its ever-praised characteristic.
