Knotty pine is a variety of timber which is used for construction purposes. They are used when the designer wants to get a rustic finish or a country accent. They get that name because the wood is distinct with large knots or knot like patterns which give a special aura when placed on walls and floors. They also produce a unique scent which is preferred by a few. Knotty pine belongs to soft wood category and they have to be carefully used, after proper conditioning and varnishing to avoid dents, scars and other damages.

Because of its specialty, they are widely used in kitchen designing, especially in kitchen cabinets. They give a unique rustic and earthy appeal when used inside the kitchen. Care should be taken while using knotty pine for kitchen cabinets. One of the problem will be they would appear to be blotchy if they are not made to look even. For achieving this, they have to be stained properly. For staining, one has to use sand paper and rub hard on the surface of the wood so that they become smooth and even. Then a coat of wood conditioner has to be applied and left for some time to dry. After that, it has to be again rubbed. Later finish has to be applied. Finally apply a coat of polyurethane with a brush and allow it to dry thoroughly. These steps are to be followed to get a fine finish in case of knotty pine kitchen cabinets.

But one has to be conscious because knotty kitchen cabinets will get damaged faster compared to other wood varieties. Knotty pine kitchen cabinets would become darker over time because pine is a wood which possess that characteristic feature. Hence finishing becomes very essential. Also people paint the frame of the kitchen cabinets made through knotty pine to get a contrast look. While using knotty kitchen cabinets, one has to avoid using hinges that are made of metal because it is a soft wood. Plastic hinges would be more appealing than the normal ones. Even designers suggest child safety locks for knotty pine cabinets so that they don’t dent or get scares when kids play or jump around. Though they are economically priced, maintenance and durability are the main problems associated with the knotty pine kitchen cabinets. Hence those who want a rustic, country side and natural look around their kitchen with less expense even if it is not durable would prefer to go for this variety of kitchen cabinets. Though not all would like this knotty look, there is always a niche market for such cabinets.
