Stain Kitchen Cabinets
You can give your kitchen a whole new look by deciding to stain kitchen cabinets. More often than not, staining kitchen cabinets makes the entire room look like everything was remodeled. First and foremost, you have to select the right color to stain kitchen cabinets. If the room is compact or small, you may want to use lighter stains. Darker stains on the other hand show less dirt such as finger prints and grease splatters even though they tend to close in a room.
If you want to stain kitchen cabinets with pre-existing stains, you may be forced to re-stain over the current wood if you will use a darker color stain. If on the other hand you want to stain new cabinets, or opt for lighter colors, you will be forced to lighten the old stain. You can remove darker stains using paint thinner or you can buy special stain remover from your local home improvement store.
Once you lighten or remove the old stain from your cabinets, you will need to sand the cabinets. New cabinets need sanding too as this prepares the wood for the primer and ensures the cabinet surfaces are smooth and perfect for staining. Once the surfaces are smooth and free from impurities, you can then proceed to apply the stain.
Before you start to stain kitchen cabinets, you should ensure that all windows are open and there is a fan blowing out of the kitchen to give the room adequate ventilation while staining the kitchen cabinets. This is because stain can contain very potent fumes that may make you and the people in the house sick on the stomach. You should also put on vinyl or rubber gloves to protect your hands before you begin to stain kitchen cabinets.
Stain isn’t like paint that you have to ensure it is evenly applied. To make the work easier for you, you can use a lint free cloth that you dip on the stain and then rub it lightly across the cabinets. You shouldn’t overload the lint free cloth lest it drips to the lower parts of your cabinet. Cover all parts of your kitchen cabinet with stain and then move to the next one until you finish staining all your kitchen cabinets.
Once you are done, leave the room for around 30 minutes or so before reapplying the second coat of stain. After you are done with the second coat, you can then leave the cabinets as they are or varnish them for that glossy appearance.
