Unlike driving schools, when it comes to heavy equipment, you learn more than just steering right and left. The lessons involve teachings on operation instructions of machinery like scrapers, loaders, excavators, bulldozers and other equipment that are considered heavy.

The certification procedures also heavily invest in safety precautions and procedures. In the wrong hands, heavy equipment can be responsible for mass destruction, especially with the kind of power that they have. Trainees are taught how to handle all the controls and how to make pre-calculations like estimation of distances and such. After the course is complete, they are taken to actual operations so that the gained knowledge can be put into practice. It’s necessary in ascertaining that they are ready for the real world.

For those who want to further their skills and add more to their resume, there are apprentice programs, which could be employer sponsored. You don’t exactly get certification at the end of the program, but your skills base is bigger, which increases the probability of you getting a job operating heavy equipment.

There are other kinds of licenses based on heavy equipment, besides those for operating them. There are programs for heavy equipment repair, which need some kind of licensing as well. Making repairs on heavy equipment is a lot harder, given the size of the parts and the machinery overall, but its one that can be done effectively. You however need to know the systems and how they work so you can be in a position to make repairs accordingly. There are programs that teach on this as well and licensing demands that you attend some classes and spend a couple of weeks doing the actual repairs. This gets you all the skills that you might need.
