Heavy equipment is a loose term used for equipments like cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, dredges, hoists, pumps, drills, compressors, etc. The operators operating these heavy equipments are known as heavy equipment operators. And the union looking after the needs and rights of these operators is known as heavy equipment operator union. 1. These heavy equipment operators are also known as hoisters or portable engineers as most of the equipments they are dealing with are either into lifting up an object or moving an object.

2. These equipment operators are the first people to be hired and the last people to leave the site in most of the construction projects. This proves the fact that how vital is their work for any construction project. They are the backbone of any construction company and if they are not there at the workplace, then there can be lot of problems created for the construction companies. So it is very important that these operators are very well taken care of and any negligence from the company’s side would bring the operator’s union into the picture.

3. There are operators who are specialists or very good at handling a particular equipment. They are the ones who are given full control of the machine whenever the project is on. But most of these operators are good at all the possible equipments in the market and are equally good at working with these machines. Their reasoning behind building up these multi skills is that there are different projects with different needs and no one project would require only one equipment. So in order to improve their job prospects, most of these operators get into these multi-tasking skill enhancements.

4. To become an operations engineer or an equipment operator, there are some skills and work experience that the person would require. They should have exposure to these equipment and their concepts, both practically and in classroom. Having worked under an operations engineer as an apprentice would be preferable. They should have transportation facilities for themselves and must have a passion to work outdoors. They should not be the ones who have aspirations of working in a corporate environment or want a cabin completely dedicated to them with computers and laptops in front of them. If such are the expectations, then they are definitely not suited for working as operations engineers or operators.
