In order for the highways and roadways to be completed there must be an arsenal of road construction equipment. Each piece of equipment has its own special task in which it has been designed to complete as well as the operator having their own training to correctly operate the equipment in the manner in which it was designed. Some of the large pieces of equipment will only be used for one part of the job while others such as a dump truck have a number of various duties.

A paving remover is one of the important pieces of road construction equipment designed to move along and pull up pieces of the existing road. Outdated and poorly designed roadways get replaced frequently and the paving remover’s primary job is to do the first preparation for the new paved road. A front end loader goes behind and picks up all of the debris left from the paving remover and loads it into a dump truck.

The dump truck is also a piece of crucial road construction equipment. The dump trucks are responsible for hauling away all of the debris, old asphalt, dirt and any other large quantity item involved in road repair. The dump truck will also haul in the new items such as the gravel and new asphalt. The first layer of the road includes tons of dirt which the dump truck will bring in for the grader to level. The grader is responsible for controlling the roadways height by smoothing and scraping away any excess. The grader is what makes the road even.

Once the asphalt has been placed down over the dirt a roller will come along and flatten then seal the layer of asphalt in order to make sure it is smooth. The roller also is responsible for removing the air pockets sometimes occurring between the various layers of mater materials. When the roller removes the air pockets it is ensuring the future roadway will not produce holes or cracks.

Depending on the road and its location there are numerous other pieces of road construction equipment that may be used such as a concrete mixer for mixing cement used over the construction of the vast majority of bridges or cranes used to lift the steel beams and placing them in the correct location. There is a great depth to the work and the equipment that goes into creating all travelling roadways.
