Perhaps before one creates an idea in their mind of how to do their kitchen to bring it off in a design of the 1950s, they should visit one of the remaining houses from that era and see what the kitchen used to look like. Mostly, it was a big spacious affair with just one white light bulb that was hung in the centre of the room. All kitchens of the then days were designed with a window or two that supplied light during the day. There is no feeling of the 1950s in your kitchen if you have no chrome fixtures for the plumbing system. For those, you can easily get them at the local antique items dealer or order for them online. Get chrome furniture for the kitchen, tables and chairs; and if you can, try chrome light fixtures as well. It was the metallic choice of the 1950s.

It is important for you to know the colors that were used in the kitchens then. Get wall papers that are pink or turquoise, or those that are related to the said ones. The effect that you want to create is one of space and room even where there is none, while at the same time adding softness to it. You could as well do your room in butternut yellow if you are savvy enough. It is easy to redesign the kitchen yourself; but again, you could hire the services of an interior décor company to do the job for you, although their services come costly. With a little time, you can do it because it requires no particular expertise or any special tools.

For the walls, just hang and paste the pink, butternut yellow or turquoise wall paper that has kitchen or food theme patterns on it. For example, you could buy one that features little steaming cups of coffee or plates of food. .

Get a linoleum sheet for the floor cut according to the size of the kitchen. The 1950s floors were linoleum. No problem here as you can put the linoleum sheet over the kitchen floor. You do not have to shoulder a burden of redesigning the floor again. Change your lighting and replace it with a white light bulb; you might be forced to rewire the light fixtures of the 50s so that they can adhere to today’s safety standards. Get chrome tables and chairs. The table could be topped up with Formica while the seats could be laid up with fitting cushions. After you throw a vinyl cover on the table, you already have your 1950s kitchen design. A vintage refrigerator and stove, chrome butter toaster and you are just about done.
