Country Cottage Kitchens

The country cottage design for a kitchen brings a feeling of warmth and relaxation to a modern day kitchen. In a vivid imagination, you can picture a country cottage without most of the modern amenities a 21st century kitchen has to offer. So how do you transform modern to rural and still maintain the functionality of a standard urban kitchen. It all has to do with the design choices that you make. Even with the latest dishwasher and stove, the cottage look is easy to achieve. You first need to let go of any your inner contemporary designer. That means any thought of incorporating stainless steel or glass to your country cottage design should be dropped this early on.

First of all is make your choice of color. The country brings a harmonious tune with nature. That means that if you could get natural colors, the look would be much easier to achieve. If you are going to go for wood for your floors, make sure it retains a dark color. This not only applies to your flooring but to your cabinetry as well. If you want a little more color, you can go for cabinets with the natural look of wood. For your countertops, go for natural stones with earthy colors. It maintains simplicity which is what the country design is all about.

For the true cottage look, appliances are usually tucked away behind unit doors. Microwaves and other smaller appliances have their individual shelving away from the countertops. If it’s not altogether possible to hide the dishwasher or the stove, at the very least ensure its stainless steel. It creates uniformity and does not at all steal the old country look. The pans and pots should be hanged, instead of storing them away in the cabinets. A wrought iron hanger with its rustic looks can be used for this. If possible incorporate open shelving in your cabinetry instead of having solid wooden doors in your upper cabinets.

Accessorizing is also important in achieving the country cottage design. Free standing wicker furniture is the kind to go for. For more detail, you can use accent pieces to fully achieve the country cottage look.

The kind of lighting you go for is important as well. Most cottages used to explore natural lighting; something you should do for your country cottage kitchen as well. You can however use chandeliers made of wrought iron, copper or burnt brass.
