Kitchen Island Design Ideas

A kitchen island has turned out to be one of those necessities of a modern kitchen. It adds working space to a kitchen and plays a multitude of other functions as well. With a functional island, you might find getting things done quicker in the kitchen. Besides it’s able to house any additional company that helps you with food preparation, especially if you are expecting guests.

There are a lot of design ideas that you could explore, kitchen size or décor not withstanding. But these are matters of preferences and narrow down to individual likes. However, there are some basic ideas that you could have fun with. First of all, establish the size of your island. The kitchen island should help reduce the distance between working spaces- and this does not mean crowd it. For a U shaped kitchen, the island should not fill up the side spaces making it hard to get in or out. If your kitchen is small, you could get an island cart instead. It offers more convenience that way.

You could add a sink into your island. Though this choice is mostly optional, most people feel comfortable having one around. Sure it means an additional plumbing and drainage expense but in the end it’s worth the trouble. The additional sink helps in washing foods before they are prepared among other things. Also consider of making full use of the island, especially the bottom. You could include storage space, or have a wine cooler installed in your kitchen island. Whatever you choose, just make sure that you utilize that space. Most homeowners like using the island as eating space as well. For this all you need are some stools and some leg space and you’ve got it.

The countertop material chosen for the cabinets should be the same for the island as well. The kitchen island is not suited to standing out; at least not like that. If you have cabinets in your island, make sure they are the same color and material as the rest of your cabinetry. This uniformity is essential.

Greatly consider your choice of lighting for your kitchen island. In most cases, the light chosen is usually subdued, and serves the island almost entirely. Having said that, pendant lights, or can lights are perfect for the role. Ensure that you have general illumination, as well, which can be got from ceiling lights and fan lights.
