Kitchens have really evolved over the years. Once only found in the back of the house, kitchen designs today take the kitchen out of the background but the challenge to my kitchen design lies in creating a more open-faced kitchen which is part of a dining room, a great room or a family room. When deciding on my kitchen design, I took into consideration such things as whether I wanted my kitchen to have an island or not, whether I want a modern or a traditional design for my kitchen? The kind of lighting design and the kinds of appliances I will need for my kitchen design were also part of the factors in consideration.

A major consideration before I started to work on my kitchen design was the peninsula or island. An island is used to connect the kitchen to a nearby family room or dining space thus creating a ‘great room’. Still on point, it will allow the cook to have a conversational and visual contact with other people in the adjoining room. My kitchen design also has a kitchen canopy that allows the creation of visible borders without having to block any views. A high ceiling on my kitchen design creates the idea of spaciousness.

Kitchen cabinets are known to help set the tone for the entire room and adjacent great room or dining room. The choice of wood influences the overall appearance of the cabinets. To have a bright look, my kitchen design has light wood such as birch, ash, oak, beech, chestnut or maple. To create a medium range look, cherry is ideal and for a darker look, my kitchen design has a choice of colored wood.

My kitchen design blueprint clearly stipulates how the cabinets and drawers and how much storage and space are needed before the actual design is implemented in the kitchen. The counter surface area is one major place to look at. Like many other designs today, my kitchen design has the gallery-type design for counter arrangements. This design is believed to be the best in terms of efficiency with the characteristic single aisle and spacious counters on either side. This makes it trouble-free to turn around from the sink to the cooking range.
