Shopping for furniture, like all other shopping endeavor, requires a lot of patience. The myriad choice available at each furniture store is baffling. So when one goes to shop for furniture, it is imperative that one has a clear idea of what he or she wants to buy. The best thing would be to arrive at a particular design and color of the piece of furniture keeping the color scheme of the room in mind.  

While furnishing the kitchen, the style – whether it is traditional or modular – assumes much importance. Also, where the furniture has to be placed should be pre-determined for optimal use of space and for ease of traversing the threshold. Particularly for chairs or stools, the height of the kitchen counter is very critical. The height of the chair should be decided based on the distance between the floor and the bottom edge of the counter, leaving some leg space in between. Additionally, the height of the people who will potentially use the chair has also to be taken into account. In case very short people or children are going to use the chair, footholds or footrests are a must so that they will be able to climb on without much hassle. Another important aspect to be decided is whether the stool should have a backrest or not. Also, swiveling chairs, as opposed to stable chairs, are ideal for people who would like to interact with each other. The color of the chair should be a contrast to the colors of the kitchen wall and floor to be appealing to the eye.  

Once the design element of the kitchen counter chair or stool is finalized, one also has to decide which material to buy. Wood-based, plastic and bamboo-based chairs are available. Depending on the general aesthetics of the kitchen and on how delicately or otherwise the chair is to be handled, the appropriate material should be chosen. Wooden chairs might not be ideal if there is much water seepage in the kitchen while plastic chairs may not withstand harsh usage.
