If you are new to the catering business there are some basic equipment needs that you will need and will be available through a supplier. The first and most important step is to have a budget. It should be one that is realistic without putting you in extreme debt and will give you ample opportunity to get the items needed. In some situations it may be necessary to order the basics until you have completed one or two paying catering jobs that will give you a better opportunity to order more supplies. Trying to purchase every item you will need can get very expensive and become slightly overwhelming so it is best to start off with basic essentials, as your company grow so will your supplies.

It is crucial to plan ahead on the size of your work area and storage space for equipment. You will also need to know before ordering supplies what types of food you will be serving in order to order the appropriate equipment. Pan size will be vital to your business, if you have a somewhat small cooking oven and stove top then order large pans that will not fit are only going to make the task of cooking much more difficult. Also be aware of the amount of people you will be comfortable serving and order accordingly.

When budget allows buy the best equipment as it will last much longer and will be more cost efficient. If you are only able to order a few items at a time, start will at least one or two pieces of quality pieces then replace the lower quality as you business grows. Used equipment may sound like a great deal but, in most situations the pieces are much worn and may not last more that with a couple of orders.

The only time used equipment would be beneficial if it was through an unexpected closure auction. There are also times when new catering companies cannot survive the first few months and will close their doors; this would most likely a beneficial time to purchase catering equipment. Finding a great supplier, however, is going to have the best results. When you find the perfect supplier they will be able to keep you up to date on sales and new equipment.
