Bathroom lighting is generally given more importance because it involves the look of the customer. Contemporary bathroom lighting is the area that is given prime importance by the hospitality industry.

The most important lighting in a bathroom is the mirror lighting. The light used for mirrors should be such that the customer should look good, glaring should not occur, a clear view should be obtained. The light should not create any shadowing effect. Shadowing near the eyes, ears and nose does not give a pleasant appearance. This can be avoided by the appropriate placement of the light. Lights placed on either side of the mirror can create a good appearance. The light used should go well with the mirror used. A good mirror light should encircle the face with light. The type of fixture also plays a key role in mirror and other lightings.

The contemporary bathroom lights are available in several shapes and sizes. The selection of the appropriate type of light depends on the function and the place. In hotels and restaurants the lights used should require minimum maintenance and maximum durability. The lamps used in contemporary bathroom lightings can be either fluorescent or incandescent lamps. The selection depends on the size of the bathroom and the number of lights to be fixed. If many number of lights are fixed it gives a bright appearance which is not generally necessary. The lighting should be just sufficient enough. The lights or lamps used should be energy saving. They should use minimum power and provide good durability and less fluctuation.

In certain places, pendant lightings are also used in bathrooms. In public places, simple lamps are used in bathrooms while in luxurious places the lighting in the bathroom is done using different shaped lamps and different types of fixtures. Several shapes are available and the shape is selected according to the dimensions of the bathroom. Generally white colors are preferred in bathrooms as other colors do not give the required lighting. Some colors create a dim effect which is generally not suitable for bathrooms.

The bathroom lighting should suit the floor of the bathroom to produce a good lighting effect. In bathrooms where huge mirrors are used the lights should be fixed on the top of the mirror and the sides which is to be carefully done to avoid the shadowing and glaring effect. Therefore the lights used in bathrooms are to be selected according to the purpose and the size of the bathroom.
