Power Light Company

Several power and lighting companies exist in all nations all over the world today. Some of these companies are very large servicing power energy requirements of larger populations like a nation while some are relatively small dealing with certain regions. There are both private and public limited companies providing lighting services.

As the name suggests, power and light(ing) companies are in the business of supplying power consumers who are either domestic or commercial and private or public. Again some power and lighting companies are involved in both the generation and distribution of power energy while others have specialized into either power generation or distribution but not both.

Where one company opts to do distribution, it must have very good relations often in the form of greater shareholding in the generating company to ensure that it will be able to buy power and sell or distribute. They are often monopolies in wherever area they operate and enjoy greater state protection since power has become another life’s basic need.

Power companies are charged with the duty of ensuring that sufficient power is generated to satisfy the needs of the population. With constant demographic changes and climate change, power companies have often themselves constrained to meet their obligations. There has been a lot of dependence on hydro based power energy though this has proved to be so climate related that its predictability fluctuates with climatic changes. There may be sufficient power when rains are abundant but when drought persist severe scarcity has been experienced.

Power lighting companies are increasingly finding it necessary to venture outside their traditional sources to apparently more reliable sources like the solar and wind. Fossil fuels have occasionally been used to generate power but the high cost are inhibit to development and industrial growth with the oil producing countries being the only beneficiaries.

It requires a lot of time and resources to harness power from emerging alternatives. This has constrained many power companies from their wish to respond adequately to power demand. For this reason they have found themselves promoting the businesses of those who either manufacture or sell products that consume minimal power. They have encouraged for example the use energy saving bulbs and the manufacture of power efficient equipments for both domestic and industrial uses.

Some power companies employ tariff rates that favor low consumers while punishing heavy consumers. New billing systems are currently being developed that change power billing from post-paid to pre-paid. These come with features that allow consumers to monitor their power consumption rates thus giving them a better understanding of their overall power consumption patterns.
