Installing Kitchen Cabinets

The first and foremost requirement for successfully installing kitchen cabinets is to take accurate measurements. Usually the companies send their employee to take the measurements so the employee bears the responsibility of taking the correct measurements.

Now a day’s most readymade Cabinets come with adjustable ends so that they fit into the desired position. Upper wall cabinets must be installed first because it is easier to install them as more space is available to wok with. It is a good practice to remove all the doors, draws and hardware and mark them with some identifiers so that they can be reassembled easily when required. This practice makes the cabinets lighter and easy to handle.

When installing a new kitchen cabinet use a pencil or chalk to mark the wall so that the cabinet can be placed easily and in correct position. Measure the height of cabinet including thickness of the top and draw a horizontal straight line on the wall so that the top of cabinet should touch this line when installed. This gives a good reference for the level of cabinet. Repeat the same process for upper cabinets so that they are also aligned horizontally. You can nail ledger boars in the wall so that the line of upper cabinets is even with the ledger board. Use temporary jacks to support cabinets against the wall. The supporting jacks must be as long as the distance from floor to the lower end of upper cabinet. The wooden supporting jacks should be used id available because they are ideal for this purpose. When the cabinets are placed alongside the wall in their desired position, use wooden screws to fix them against the wall. Longer screw must be used so that they penetrate deep into the wall .Each cabinet should be fixed with 4 to 6 screws so that they are tightly fixed. Use the same procedure to attach the upper cabinets against the walls. Finally attach adjacent cabinets with each other so that they are further strengthened. Make sure that the faces of cabinets are attached to each other. When all the cabinets are installed remove the supporting jacks and ledger boards. If any part of wall is damaged in the process repair it. If the cabinets are with freestanding bases, level them using shimming if required and set the cabinets in place. If the cabinets are without freestanding bases they must be leveled as a unit.
