Rocking chairs are believed to have been around since the 1700's.  The first rocking chair was originally used as a garden chair.  It was created at Windsor Castle and the back of the rocking chair appeared like a bird cage because the spindles of the back were in the shape of a hoop.  Of course, the Windsor was crafted out of wood, but after it came into existence, there have been numerous variants of rocking chairs.  Rocking chairs made of wicker came after the birth of the Windsor, and even rocking chairs that glide. 

Because the people of England used the first rocking chairs in their gardens, the rocking chair has become a symbol of enjoyment and relaxation.  Americans place rocking chairs on their porches to relax in after a hard day of work and enjoy the evening breezes.  It is said that the idea of the rocking chair came from the rocking ability of a baby cradle.  Mothers often look for rocking chairs with comfortable backs to soothe their babies to sleep and while nursing.
