The classic rocking chair is considered an heirloom and a really antique piece can fetch you a good amount. These chairs are extremely comfortable and their rocking motion is a soothing experience for de-stressing. Everybody finds a rocking chair very pleasing from a child to an old man. Rocking chairs are particularly useful for calming babies and putting them to sleep by their mothers.

Rocking chairs and gliders have a slightly different design. The rocking chair will rock your body back and forth, while the glider will smoothly slide your seat forward and backward generating the rocking motion. The usual design of the rocking chair has not changed through the ages and it has the same curved slats on its legs that enable you to rock back and forth. The glider on the other hand has a superior design of mechanical slides which enable the sliding motion of the seat.

Another major difference between rocking chairs and gliders is the difference in safety. A person or child who stands very close to a rocking chair can get their toes crushed under the curved slats if they are not careful. The glider is much safer as the gliding mechanism is on the inner side of the legs which are totally on the floor all the time. Also if the designing of the rocking chair is not proper, and the person is rocking intensely, it has a potency to tip over causing injury to the person sitting on it. It is very important that the pitches of the curved slats are properly measured for the size of the chair otherwise there is a danger of tipping over. In the glider there is not much of this kind of danger.

Rocking chairs and glider are both available in a variety of models although their basic mechanism remains the same. The older models of rocking chairs were a simple design in wood without any cushioning. The latest models are however available with plush upholstery and many are now available in material other than wood. There are popular models available in metal with a mesh design for the backrest and seat. The glider is considered more of a luxurious chair and most models will have proper cushioning and fabric upholstery, and some come with an ottoman as well.

There are indoor and outdoor models available for both rocking chairs and gliders. The outdoor models will be weatherproof and made from materials which will withstand the elements.
