Coleman lanterns come in different types- gas, battery and rechargeable. These have their own merits and demerits and it is your right to know just which you would go for in case you needed one.

When it comes to the aspect of safety, then battery lanterns stand out as the safest, more so when you have kids all over the place. To light them up, you do not need to use a flame, which makes them even better suited for camping because they are not dangerous with tents. The light they emit is enough for eating, reading, or even washing the dishes. As opposed with other types, these lanterns obviate the need to carry along some extra fuels which can cause unnecessary mess especially if you do not carry a funnel with you.

However, they tend to be a bit heavier and there is need to carry along some bulbs and batteries if you do not have the type that is rechargeable.

Another type, the fuel lanterns, gives out bright light that burns intensely and can light up your campsite as well as other surrounding areas. You will need priming, pumping and igniting prior to lighting up the lantern especially if you use white gas and unleaded fuel.

It is easier to use the canister type lanterns because all that will be required of them will be turning them on and igniting. You will also want to have with you extra mantles and fuel. The fuel type normally comes with globes of glass which means you will have to handle them with a lot of care, just like other delicate camping equipment.

Generally, you should always think of battery or electric lanterns for your camping needs because they are not only safer but also much easier to use. However, their massive weight will really put in check what you have to carry to the campsite especially if you have to carry around a lantern that weighs five ponds plus a couple of batteries. In that case, you can go for more light weight camping lanterns.

The type that is generally recommended for camping is the chargeable portable type. It weighs 6 pounds and will give out light for up to 10 hours before it can be recharged again. It is weather resistant and does not require any more tools if you want to replace the tube.
