Liquid Propane Conversion

Converting the fuel vehicles into liquid propane helps to have natural gas vehicles. Most vehicles with the gasoline engine can be converted into a “Liquid Propane Gas” (LPG) which is otherwise known as “Compressed Natural Gas”. Converting the fuel vehicles into natural gas vehicles is known as Liquid propane conversion, which helps to be an emission and pollution free vehicle.

There are two types of conversion systems in liquid propane, Open loop system and closed loop system. In the open loop system, the electronics and the electronic parts cannot be controlled; hence it’s impossible to measure its performance. In the closed loop system, the electronics and the electronic parts can be controlled, and it incorporates a sensor that will provide all the data continuously on its performance. Installing a closed loop system is comparatively expensive than the open loop system.

The liquid propane is converted into a gaseous form by the regulator or vaporizer present in the engine when there is a propane supply. The gas passes through the fuel mixer which is found close to the manifold. Filtered air and gas get mixed and passes through the combustion chambers in a gaseous form which is free from pollutants like lead, sulfur and carbon. It’s been advised to use only the LP motor vehicle tank made to ASME, DOT or ICC as they are rupture resistance and built in such a way to last forever and to stay safer in an accident which is inclined to leakage.

When compared with gasoline, liquid propane contains an extra 5% energy and 30% lesser density and the engines can longer two to three times than the gasoline. It’s also been proven that LP will not cause damage to the car plugs, valves and contaminate the engine oil or the air we breathe. The major disadvantages found is, it will cost $150 to convert into LP though it can be recovered within one year, secondly it’s not convenient enough to fill up the tank as like filling up the gasoline at a station.

As per the “Energy Policy Act of 1992” and “Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990” liquid propane is denoted as an approved alternative fuel. More than 10,000 public and 3,000 private propane refueling stations is available now and propane powered automobiles are been manufactured highly. Since the fuel system in propane is sealed effectively gas evaporation is prevented even though while refueling.
