Camera equipments include such items as cameras, lenses, camera accessories, digital cameras, binoculars, camcorders, dark room and lighting equipment, video and audio components, telescopes, adapters, electronic flush units, and photography materials. Camera equipments are often delicate and sensitive to handling methods which often require great precaution. Cameras are designed to be easy maintenance equipments which require no scheduled maintenance or service repairs but still require repairs whenever certain components break down or malfunction. Those conversant with camera equipments are aware of the need to clean camera bodies, lenses, and many accessories and to keep them lubricated and well adjusted.

It is not a bad idea buying used camera equipments just like other equipments. But a lot more precaution is required than may be required in other equipments. The established distributors of brand new camera equipment often act as sellers of used equipments of the products. The sellers are many cases the maintenance service providers meaning that those whose equipments have broken down may take to them for repairs. Depending on their findings and associated costs, they may be able to repair the equipment or advice the owner to think of buying another. This leaves opportunities for recovering certain parts that may still be useful and which can be used to service other equipments.

Those who maintain and or repair used camera equipment are not limited to established dealers. In fact in a majority of cases and places one finds independent technicians repairing and selling used camera equipments. When buying used equipment it is incumbent upon the buyer to verify the quality of item to be purchased and ensure they get value for their money. It as proper to get the equipment checked by a competent technician if possible preferred by the buyer and where possible necessary guarantees be given.

Another factor that leads to availability of used equipment is cannibalization. Certain equipment attract state taxation when finished but not when brought in pieces or have varying tax structures for complete equipments and components. This may encourage traders to cannibalize certain equipment and sell them as used parts especially if it is easy to find market for parts rather than complete units.

Just like when buying new equipments, the decision to purchase used camera equipments should be based on the needs of the buyer and not spontaneous purchasing for what one comes across. Those who use cameras for commercial purposes may require information as to the compatibility of the used equipment with the rest of the equipment.
