Government Free Credit Check

Government free credit check requires that every credit bureau provide each credit card holder with a free credit report every year. This was effected following rising cases involving credit card information theft and credit card identity theft. It was established that one reason which made credit card frauds more prevalent was the fact that many people never bothered to check their credit reports on the assumption that they were on the good side of the law. Some credit card holders were often perplexed when they applied for credit cards only to be turned down on the basis some incidents which never occurred in their lives. Others were dismayed when the federal police came to arrest them to answer questions related to certain crimes.

Most of the time incidences like the above came to light several years after their occurrences which made the investigations even more complicated with the real culprits never apprehended. This prompted the government to make it a statutory requirement to furnish all credit card holders with the credit report after every twelve months which was deemed satisfactory to enable credit card holders know what is contained in their credit reports and to dispute it before it is too late. It would be unimaginable to think that the credit card fraud investigators would just pick a case out of the blue and follow it up.

The government encourages every credit card holder to ensure they obtain their free annual copies from the respective credit bureaus and read it carefully and to raise any complaints or anomalies in the shortest time possible. This serves to eliminate cases of ignorance and incase something comes up about credit card history that was neither raised nor disputed by the concerned party then part assumes full responsibility.

The government’s directive to have every credit card holder receive free copies of their credit reports annually and allow individuals to raise any suspicious issues does not make it easier for the police to know who is the real culprit for which reason the credit card holder whose credit card information and / or identity has been stolen is the first suspect as police do a method of elimination to narrow down on real culprits. It is possible for a credit holder who finds himself unable to pay their account balances to say that someone else has messed their accounts. This is not a common practice among many people may for one reason or another find themselves in difficult financial positions yet it is investigations that finally proves.
