Solar flood lights would be a good idea to save on electricity costs. Quite a lot of electricity would be needed for lighting outside, especially for flood lighting and opting for solar flood lights will only help in bringing down the cost.

It is not too difficult to install these solar flood lights outside – one needs some basic electrical knowledge and a willing attitude to put in some effort. If you are not prepared for that, then it would be better to pay a little extra and engage an electrician for this purpose.

It would help in having outdoor lights which will automatically turn on at a certain time so that it will save your time and putting them on every day. While installing the solar lights outside, you will need to check which areas which would need more lighting and which would need less. Obviously, those areas which are at the back and a little more secluded can do with some more light - no point in spending extra money and having uniform bright lighting for the entire outdoors unless budget is not a problem with you.

You will need to check how high you need the lights to be positioned at-ideally, it should not be so low that a burglar can remove them with ease-similarly, they should not be so high that if they are not functioning, you would be inconvenienced in having them repaired .You must make sure that the light falls properly on the areas that you need to be lit such as the pathways, the approach to the garage door, the approach to your house, etc.

Please be sensitive to your neighbor’s privacy by ensuring that the lights do not fall directly onto the inside of their houses.

You must make sure that if you are installing solar flood lights above a certain voltage; you would need to obtain the necessary approvals from the local building department or the local electricity authorities. If that is the case, then it would be better to have an electricity inspector to check after the installation is complete – when you are dealing with high voltage, it is better to take some extra precautions.

In some areas or communities, there would be some restrictions about putting some security lights, so please check that you are not flouting guidelines in place – if you need to take the necessary permission from the local homeowner’s association, it is better that you please take them.
