5 Lb Propane Tank

5lb propane tanks are a very reliable way of transporting propane for campers and those who enjoy cruising. It is the only option that does not involve expensive custom made installations. The only disadvantage is that most suppliers do not refill the tanks since they are not equipped to do so.

The good news is that you can personally refill a 5bl propane tank. This is an activity that should be handled with caution since propane is a very volatile substance. It is vital for you to practice safety protocols to the letter. But for starters, you need to get an adapter.

The adapter has faced some negative criticism from people. Some say that the adapters are not simple to use. For someone to have a simple time using the adapters, they need to acquire a few tricks up their sleeves. For starters, you have to know how propane functions. Propane is denser than air; so in case of any leakages, it settles on low spots thus being a hazard. It is therefore important for someone to follow procedure. Propane is usually stored under pressure; it is therefore important for you to make sure that before you re-fill a tank, you have to inspect it for any damages.

All propane tanks can handle the same amount of pressure. The only difference is that different temperatures produce different pressures. Never re-fill a propane tank when the temperatures are high. Liquid gas vaporizes until the pressure in the cylinder is enough to prevent further vaporization. This is largely influenced by external temperatures.

The pressure created during re-filling is what forces the gas out once the valve is opened. The decrease in pressure causes the remaining propane to vaporize and occupy the vacuum. As long as a propane tank contains some gas, it will maintain constant pressure.

When you are re-filling a propane tank, always make sure you fill it with liquid propane and not gas. To do this, you need to turn your bigger propane tank upside down. This will cause the liquid propane to displace gas. Make sure that the pressure between the two tanks is not the same. You can freeze the empty cylinder for quarter an hour or you can use needle nosed pliers to pull the pin of the pressure relief valve.

Then, with the difference in pressures, liquid propane will be transferred to the empty cylinder so as to balance out the pressure difference. After you have refilled the cylinder, apply soup on both valves to ensure that there are no leakages. Make sure you do not over fill the portable propane tank.
