Vibration Testing Equipment

What is vibration testing equipment? Vibration testing equipment is used to test the structural response of a device. Two typical types of vibration testing exist - sine and random tests.

Sine testing is defined as testing the structural response of a device under test (DUT), one frequency at a time. A random test consists of testing the structural response a device under test (DUT) with all frequencies. The random test is considered to be much more "real world" than a sine test. An example of this would be the test of how much vibration a rut in the road causes a car when it hits the rut.

Vibration testing equipment is used to conduct these tests. For instance, a shaker is used to test vibration by attaching it to the shaker's "table." In low frequency tests, a type of vibration testing equipment called a servohydraulic or electrohydraulic shaker is used. In higher frequency ranges, a type of vibration testing equipment called electrodynamic shakers are used.

During testing, the DUT control points are kept at a specific vibration level. Response points are tested at the maximum vibration level, which is also known as "resonance." Minimum vibration levels are also sometimes tested. The result of this is known as "anti-resonance."

Most of the time vibration testing equipment is used to conduct a vibration test one DUT axis at a time, even when most instances of vibration happen on multiple axes at a time.

Vibration testing is often done according to the "mass-spring-damper" model. This model is a good for testing a wide variety of vibrations. For instance, you can even use this model to test the vibration of a car body. It involves using a summation of mass-spring-damper models to test this complex structure.

A simple harmonic oscillator is an example of the vibration testing equipment that uses the mass-spring-damper model. Engineers use this type of vibration testing equipment to run many diagnostic tests on the systems they build and test. Vibration testing equipment can be found in many locations online. Be sure to work with a reputable dealer when purchasing or renting vibration testing equipment.
